#HASHTAG – A symbol of trend-seekers and trend-setters on the internet, has changed the world of social media. Over a decade has passed & it has evolved every day, building a connection between the users and brand.

It all started with Twitter in the year 2007, when the first hashtag- #barcamp was used by Chris Messina.

By 2009, Twitter had officially turned it into a clickable format!

A single symbol used before a word, phrase or keyword without any space or punctuation, helped categorize the world-wide data making it easier for the users to find information about a specific topic. Around millions of people use hashtags regularly.

The Era of Hashtags –

It was reported, about 125 million hashtags were used in the year 2018 by Twitter. And the number would still grow by 2019.

3. Campaign Based Hashtags

In one day around 500 million tweets are sent, and it becomes difficult for the brands to make their content reach the right audience. And brands have started running a whole marketing campaign using a hashtag. Through this reach get maximized and the brand content gets noticed on social platforms. 

For e.g. #HarGhoontMeinSwagHai campaign by Pepsi which is based on the admission season for youths waiting for the cut-offs to be announced, with a message that ‘Cut Off Is Temporary and Swag is Permanent.’ This a type of awareness among the youths.

4. Generated by Users –

There are certain types of hashtags generated by users and they are occasionally used and are not event-based.

For e.g. #IndiaTravel, these types of hashtags gain attraction and are seen for several hours/days on the top trending list of hashtags of Twitter. A brand/business can use these trending hashtags related to their company and reach people away from their followers.

5. Evergreen Hashtags –

Hashtags like #TuesdayThoughts #WednesdayWisdom, #Throwback #TGIF are evergreen hashtags because they trend very frequently on social media platforms. Brands make sure to take the maximum leverage out of such trends for gaining visibility.

A twitter hashtag should be simple, unique and relevant in nature. It should limit to one or two per tweet to keep the value of the content.
