‘INDIA’ or ‘BHARAT’? Constitutionally, India and Bharat both are the name of our country according to Article 1. The Hindi version of Article 1 of the document reads: “Bharat, arthath India, rajyon ka sangh hoga”.For many days we have been hearing about the change in the name of our country worldwide from India to ‘Bharat.’ But why so? And from where did it start?

What does ‘BHARAT’ actually mean? According to the history, “Bhārat” (Hindi: भारत), the name for India in several Indian languages, is mainly derived from the name of the Vedic tribe of Bharatas who are mentioned in the Rigveda as one of the principal kingdoms of the Aryavarta. As it is said in Vishnu Puran, Bharat is –

“उत्तरं यत्समुद्रस्य हिमाद्रेश्चैव दक्षिणम् ।

वर्षं तद् भारतं नाम भारती यत्र संततिः ।।”

i.e. “The country (varṣam) that lies north of the ocean and south of the snowy mountains is called Bhāratam; there dwell the descendants of Bharata.”

Nationwide we have been using the ‘Bharat’ spasmodically. Whether it be ‘BHARAT MATA JI JAI’ or during movements like ‘SWACCH BHARAT’ or even when our Prime Minister addresses the nation.

While we all have different opinions, the impact will be similar for everyone. By changing the name, businesses not only traditionally but also digitally will be facing the consequences. Adopting Bharat worldwide would have a great impact on every industry whether it be sales, marketing, or production.
